Project Overview

We designed a mobile app for operation managers and engineers in the energy service sector. The app helps users keep track of well progress and status. Users can easily check their list of wells, spot issues, and access specific well activities.

Challenges

Our main challenge was creating and prototyping a dynamic well list that offers users an immediate, high-level overview of all their wells. It was crucial for users to quickly access detailed progress updates for each well, with the ability to contact on-site 'Tool Push' or 'Company Man' for verification. Additionally, the app needed to facilitate thorough analysis of well traces, highlighting comments at specific points, and providing real-time monitoring of drilling operations. We also aimed to ensure the app's functions matched users' familiarity with desktop software behaviours.

Solutions

We used a prototype as a guide, working closely with the development team to successfully bring the project to life. This teamwork set the groundwork for future platform improvements.

Process

  1. We interviewed clients to understand requirements and gather insights into existing EDR (Electronic Data Recorder) tools. This helped us grasp the kind of information management needed to assess well conditions.
  2. We outlined user flows for both managers seeking well status updates and engineers making operational decisions by examining well details.
  3. We designed, iterated, and prototyped a low-fidelity mockup, having it evaluated by stakeholders and a chosen user group to ensure it was well accepted and easy to use.
  4. Our team created high-fidelity mockups and development assets, crucial for the later development phase.

The Design

Central to the app's functioning is the depth chart. This chart enables engineers and managers to see a well's performance, health, and operator comments in a comprehensive way. By interacting with the blue numbered boxes, users can access extra comments at corresponding depths, giving engineers a full understanding. At the bottom, engineers can keep an eye on safety-related equipment details through customizable key metrics.
